Pitched roofs are downward sloping roofs, made usually in two parts at an angle from a central ridge. A pitched roof can, however, be made in one single part, from edge to edge. The difference between a pitched roof and a flat roof is due to the pitch of a roof which is the vertical rise divided by the span of its horizontal and is a measure of how steep it is. A flat roof is a roof with a slope less than 10°, but in the main are much less a gradient than that.

The primary ways that pitched roofs are made are firstly cut roof and secondly russ roof. Cut roofs are wooden and built up with purlins, joists, rafters and ridge boards. Russ roofs are made with prefabricated russes.

Pitched roofs from Maiva
The main sections to explore within our pitched roof offering are:

Tiling

Roof tiles have the primary purpose of keeping out rain and are traditionally made from materials such as terracotta or slate. More recently materials such as concrete, plastics and even some clay tiles are used which have a waterproof glaze.

Slating

Roof slate is one of the most durable roofing materials and can last over 100 years. Slate is a natural rock mined which when cut becomes a sheet of the shingle.

Re-roofing

Re-roofing is the roofing technique where new shingles are repeatedly layered on top of existing ones. Re-roofing can be done if your roof is in overall good shape or if it’s at the end of the lifecycle and in need of full repair.

Lead roofing

Lead roofing utilises possibly the oldest material used in the roofing sector – lead which is still a really popular option today in the roofing trade. Lead roofing benefits from being a durable, reliable choice of, excellent for a range of roofing purposes.

Chimneys

Chimneys, as we know and love, are passages that take smoke from a fire up out of your home and out through the roof of the house. Chimneys typically made of brick are a key part of the home. Chimney comes from the French word Cheminee which means ‘a room with a hearth’.

Pitched roof options. The various forms of pitched roof include:

Collar pitched roof
Collar pitched roofs are built by making the height bigger of the joists in the ceiling which are above the rafters. Doing so makes it possible with the collar roof to have rooms in the upper section constructed in the roof space. This option can be made slightly more cost-effective by reducing the height of the external walls and the amount of brick needed to complete the build.

Closed couple roof
Closed couple roofs are created when you add in ceiling joists, timber that’s lined up lengthways in between rafter feet, which forms the couple roof structure. This couple roof uses a joist which forms a tie stopping the deflection of the wall at the same time as widening the roof span.

Trussed rafter
Trussed rafters are by far the most popular and contemporary form of trussed rafter. In the trade it’s referred to as the W truss or fink and works with the rafter absorbing the tension and taking on the shape of a W. You can achieve a roof span of up to 12 metres and are flexible enough to incorporate various angles in the roof.

Mono pitch roof
Mono pitched roofs are the ones which slope from one side of a building to another side of the building. The mono-pitch roof is a very popular form of extension and is made up of multiple rafters which are joined to walls at either end of the roof using battens which roof coverings are fixed to.

Couple roof
Couple roofs have a couple of lengths of timber lining up against each other tied a the point where they join at the top. A couple roof is a pitched roof that is an extremely common and really easy and effective type of roof.

Large section truss
Large section trusses create an enlarged roof span that is bigger than alternative roofing approaches to increasing roof span.

Purlin roof
Purlin roofs are used to increase the span of the roof and are done in a way which critically doesn’t reduce your wall stability. This works with the purlin driven into the roof structure, and rafters being given increased support.
