Roof tiling

Roof tiling work can range from a few missing tiles to regular roof tile inspection checks, to a full out replacement. Whatever roof tiling you need Maiva can be trusted to help.

Replacing a roof tile

Changing a roof tile is the most basic roofing skill and one that many DIY roofers will attempt themselves. Whilst repairing your own roof tile isn’t the worst idea possible, you may need to be cautious as it’s easy to dislodge roof tiles if you’re not careful or trained.

There are lots of websites that show you how to replace nearly all types of broken roof tile or roof slate all without creating further unnecessary damage.

Some of the aspects of roof tiling that make it more complicated and error-prone include; roof tile fixing, removing or changing an interlocking tile, changing a plain tile, replacing hanging tiles or hanging slates, removing and replacing a slate and roof tile identification.

An important aspect when we replace broken tiles is to get a colour match on the existing roof tiles.

Roof tiling entire roof

Roof tiling at the other end of the spectrum involves replacing or titling new roofs in their entirety. The projects take longer, are more involved but ultimately can shape how your house looks so represent an amazing opportunity to enhance your homes appearance and add value in the process.

Roof tile fixing

Many roofing tile projects see it as common practice to fix every third row of tiles with clout nails, starting at the bottom, with every third row after that and which are nailed using galvanised steel, aluminium, or copper clout nails.

The two other rows of unfixed tiles then rely on lugs cast into the tile itself on the underneath of the roof tile near the head, which lets the roof tile hang from the roofs batten with the weight of the overlapping tiles above holding it in place.

Roof tiles usually have two fixing points, lugs or lugs and nails. Roofing slates will always be nailed as they only have this point of fixing unless it’s a hook fixing.

Here is a brief summary of the roof tiling options you have:

  • Plain Roofing Tiles

Plain roofing tiles are small rectangular tiles traditionally made of clay which often had a camber in them meaning they would lie slightly unevenly creating a distinct and old-world look. Modern plain roof tiles either still made from clay or more often from concrete can also be made to appear uneven and rugged.

Plain tiles are often the most expensive, due to longer time it takes to fit them but the look is arguably the best of the three types of roof tiles.

  • Interlocking Roofing Tiles

Interlocking roof tiles are the lowest cost roof tile choice and as such are the ones used on new build properties due to the cost-benefit.

Interlocking roof tiles come in lots of variants such as clay and concrete, and ones that can be made to resemble single roll pantiles and flat planes of slate roofs.

  • Roof Tiles from Slate

Roof tiles from slate have been around for a very long time and are still one of the most chosen ways to cover a roof.

Natural slates don’t have any drips or contours which have to be laid in a way that ensures every part of the roof meaning that at some points they may be treble lapped.

An alternative to natural slate is Manmade slates which look very similar to natural slates and are slightly more durable but not much lower cost.
